April 13, 2019: Grand Opening of the Neches River National Wildlife Refuge
The Grand Opening, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturday, April 13, will feature guided nature walks, van tours along the Neches River, kids activities, and a fun program about the refuge.
For 15 years conservationists have worked with the US Fish and Wildlife Service to help get the refuge established, land acquired (now 7,000 acres!), and the facilities in place to open the refuge. The April 13 event celebrates the opening day! After the Grand Opening, the refuge will be open sunrise to sunset seven days a week, with primitive camping allowed by permit. Over the next couple of years, activities will be expanded, with hunting and fishing programs currently being designed and work started on nominating a State Paddling Trail on the Neches River.
